John A. Cloward

JOHN'S OBITUARY

John Alston Cloward, 68, passed away Sept. 19, 2020. John was born September 23, 1951 in Fort Meade, Maryland, fourth child to Glannin Alexius and Ruby Dolores Alston Cloward. In his childhood his father was an officer in the U.S. Air Force, so the family lived in many interesting places. John graduated from Clearfield High School in Utah, class of 1969. He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in South Korea 1970-72.

After returning he attended University of Utah NROTC program, then the U.S. Naval Academy, class of 1977 (22nd Company), in Annapolis, MD, where he met and married Jacqueline Rolfson, enjoying many food adventures with her to get through the long study days. Upon graduation John and Jacqueline shipped off to Asia where he served in the U.S. Navy for nine years in Japan and Korea. He worked as a Surface Warfare Officer and earned his parachutist jump wings, and especially loved his service with the ship USS Midway (CV-41). He later enjoyed opportunities in the oil production industry with Exxon, Conoco Phillips and Meridian Energy, including work in engineering, risk management and computer services.

John completed his B.S. in Naval Engineering and Chinese Area/Language Studies at the US Naval Academy (1977), and his MBA at University of California Los Angeles’ Anderson School of Management (1988). He loved volunteering with Boy Scouts of America, training young men to be Eagle Scouts, exploring the outdoors and earning Wood Badge completion, and serving as a Scout Committee Chair and other posts over 44 years. He had a lifelong love of learning, and enjoyed traveling, building computers, photography, and all good music, especially folk and Celtic styles.

John lived a life of service. As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, he built great faith in Jesus Christ and lived to teach and lift others, exemplifying Christ and the values of love and family to many. He sought to bring others under his wing and protect, guide and lift them to be their best.

John is survived by his wife of 43 years, Jacqueline R Cloward, and children: Sarah Anne Cloward of Clearfield, UT; David Rolfson Cloward (Celestia) of Oak Harbor, WA; Amy Elizabeth Cloward of Katy, TX; Katharine Laura Cloward Smith (Benjamin) of Pomona, CA; and Tasha Marissa Joseph of Idaho Falls, ID; nine grandchildren: Shiloh Emily, Scott Orion, Dante Mars, Serena Ruby, Azaria Rose, Heidi Joy, Vivian Haven, and Amara Atlantis Cloward, and Gabriel Odin Cloward Smith; and sisters Marilyn (Walter) Rudolph of Orem, UT; Connie E. Cloward of Provo, UT; and Sylvia (Donald) Suhaka of Mesa, AZ.

The family appreciates the care of the ambulance crew and the Houston Medical Center Northwest Hospital for their efforts at the time of his passing.

John was such a good friend. His entire family have been like family my children and I. John was a noble, soft spoken man with a fervent testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ. John, thanks for the memories..

John and I shared many classes together through high school  I admired his quick wit and his thirst for knowledge  Although we often bickered like siblings, I deeply admired him for his persistence (like a dog with a bone) and his personal compass  John knew what he wanted and set his sails in the direction to get there. Smooth sailing, old friend. My thoughts and prayers are with Jacqueline and her family during this sad and difficult time.
